More Vigilante

Sadly these are some tiny and faded scans but good stuff nonetheless. These are a couple of Gray Morrow's ADVENTURE COMICS back-up stories of the Earth-1 Vigilante from the 1970's.

Jet Powers

Here's Gray's recognizable art on the cover of JET POWER # 2, circa 1958, one of the infamous IW/Super reprinted comics of the late fifties and early sixties. Nearly all of these new editions had newly drawn covers, often by the likes of Ross Andru and Mike Esposito or Jack Abel but here by Gray Morrow. The interiors were a reprint of an issue of JET and featured Bob Powell art.

Ace and Lancer Covers

The ever-delightful GOLDEN AGE COMIC BOOK STORIES blog--which sometimes rarely has much to do with golden age comic book stories--spotlights a whole big bunch of Gray's covers for Ace and Lancer sci-fi paperbacks in the sixties and seventies.

Perry Rhodan

For my money, some of Gray Morrow's best design work came in his numerous covers for Forrest J. Ackerman's seventies pulp paperback reprints of the German space hero PERRY RHODAN. Thanks to Ronn S for sharing some choice scans of same this morning.

Spectre and Madame Xanadu

Some of my favorite Gray Morrow work was on THE SPECTRE in the 1980's. One of his longer runs, with stories written by the great Doug Moench, the series was given more characterization than it had ever had before. The Ghostly Guardian was even given a sort of, kind of, almost love interest in Madame Xanadu, herself an abandoned DC character. The pair are sen here in this original art.

Gray Tribute Cover

From the same issue of COMIC BOOK ARTIST we referenced yesterday, here is a nice photo of Gray on the back cover.

Gray by Netzer and Kupperberg

I finally found the January, 2002 issue of COMIC BOOK ARTIST in a box at the very back of my closet. This issue, # 17, features nearly 20 pages in memory of the then-recently deceased Gray Morrow. Amongst all the photos and art one finds these two lovely portraits of Gray by two great friends of my blogs--Alan Kupperberg and Michael Netzer.

Vampirella Redux

A while back we ran a commissioned Vampi by Gray that didn't quite work for me. This one is much better. MUCH better. From 1988.
