Gray's Fantastic!

Gray Morrow's fantastic! Isn't he? Here, once again courtesy of fan/collector Paul M, is a nifty selection of colorful sci-fi pulp covers from FANTASTIC, originally published from the mid-sixties into the early seventies. Note that Gray's covers were illustrating early stories by future bestselling novelists, John Jakes and Dean Koontz.

  1. Steve,

Seeing all these fabulous covers makes me wish someone like Twomorrows or Vanguard would put out a big art book on Gray. He did so much excellent work over the years that there really should be a comprehensive volume reproducing as much of it as possible, along with an analysis of his various techniques and some decent biographical info.

I know there was one book on him that came out several years ago, but I've never been able to get a copy of it. It's time for a larger-scale effort from someone, as all his great work needs to be preserved for posterity in one deluxe volume.

  2. I passed on your comment to J. David Spurlock of Vanguard Press and while he seems to have missed the point, he did offer you the following suggestion for finding a copy of GRAY MORROW-VISIONARY:

  3. Hi Steve,

Thanks for taking the time to do that. After I posted the comment I took a look at Bud Plant's website, just on the off chance they might have a copy of the book, and wouldn't you know, they did! So I ordered it right away.

I've enjoyed a number of the art books Vanguard has published over the last few years, so I thought they might be an appropriate publisher for a book on Gray Morrow, as well. But if J.D.S. feels the other book is comparable to the stuff he's been putting out, then I'll certainly look forward to getting it.

    Regards,

    John S.
