Back in June, we ran a tiny excerpt from Gray's HEROES PORTFOLIO for Sal Q from 1977. Once again, we have Ronn S. to thank for better scans of all the plates. I particularly like the Lone Ranger and Tonto as well as Vigilante. Black Terror doesn't really look all that terrifying and the immodest Modesty Blaise seems a tad sickly for some reason. I'm on record as being a fan of Gray's realistic looking Joker and the artist almost makes me think Hawkman could work in real life with this image!

It would've been interesting to see Gray write/draw a Hawkman story in one of the dollar priced 100 page World's Finest that also featured Don Newton's Shazam work.
ReplyDeleteI like them all, particularly the Hawkman and the Joker. not quite sure why Modesty Blaise has got one of her tits out, but, hey, I guess that's Gray Morrow for you. that's a pretty cool portfolio.
ReplyDeleteVigilante is outstanding in this set! Morrow could draw him like no one else!

These are arguably the best images drawn of these characters (or at least tied for such). This is a great portfolio of prints by Gray. But they (fortunately!) are pretty common in terms of attainability, and what is hilarious are the greedy folks out there who try to sell these at sky-high prices (shame on them!). And what's even worse are the goofballs who break up the set, and attempt to sell the prints separately at much-too-high prices. Some people have no scruples.
