Let me start by briefly mentioning that I scripted a comic for Morrow. It was in 91 or 92, I believe, and it was entitled, "Cosmic K----". Fantagraphics published it and there are thousands of copies floating around, so if yr really curious, Google it.
Now then, to the picture here. Magnus robots didn't have legs any more than a mermaid does! Make what Freudian conclusion you will from that comparison, but the fact remains that these Morrow robots look like sports drawings, albeit with spray-on aluminum finishes. I mean, LOOK at the butt on the robot in the foreground! That globular bunching of fat and muscle not only looks more human than robot, it looks more gay than straight. Not that there's anything wrong with it.
Manning's Magnus robots tended to float on funnels that fired off blue lighting, if I recall correctly. But they never had legs. OH! Except when they were disguised as humans. Yeah, watch out for them evil robots!
Nonetheless and notwithstanding, it is a pretty drawing with lovely painted hues and dynamic figures. Maybe I should just turn off the adult part of critical faculties and enjoy it at an immediate, childlike, sensual level.
In any event, THANK YOU for sharing this fascinating bit of Morrow's work.
Alan Kupperberg, artist and friend of Gray Morrow, has gone on to a successful artistic career at Marvel, DC and NATIONAL LAMPOON (amongst many other venues) and now he's available for personal private commissions! For more details you can contact Alan directly at:
First published in 1968 (I was 9!), I have been writing professionally part-time for more than two decades. I have been freelancing for various authors, editors and publishers for the past three years on the behind-the-scenes tasks of writing.
Awesome! Even at a distance, Leeja looks hot.
